According to the GHS the literacy rate for South Africa is 93%, which is quite good.
We however find that schoolchildren’s ability to read on the right level is appallingly low.

Only 21,42% of pupils that start Grade 1 finishes Grade 12!!!
Stimulus Maksima®, a computer-aided education aid, gave their software for us to use in the ministry. We can host 5 children at a time for Reading training. All the children are at primary school between Grade 3 and 5. When we test them for the first time, most of them cannot read on Grade 1 level!!

The children come for the reading training once a week. We have seen a remarkable improvement in their ability to read and have a direct result to their school work.
